Salmond evidence refusal ‘risks credibility’ of probe says senior MSP

A senior MSP has claimed the credibility of the Alex Salmond Inquiry is at stake over the refusal to publish his evidence.

Jackie Baillie hit out amid growing concerns Salmond will boycott his appearance in front of MSPs tomorrow.

It is understood Salmond will only appear if his evidence is published.

It also comes after a newspaper report claimed at least one MSP on the inquiry could quit after the evidence row.

Baillie, interim leader of Scottish Labour and a member of the inquiry, said: “Given that a lot of the information is already in the public domain, it is exceedingly strange that the committee cannot ask about it.

“The credibility of the committee and the Parliament is at stake.”

The Holyrood committee is probing the Government’s mishandling of sexual misconduct complaints against Salmond.

The former SNP leader took the Government to court in 2018 and it was accepted the internal probe had been unlawful. He was awarded more than £500,000 in legal costs.

Salmond allies believe he was targeted by SNP and Government figures.

The latest inquiry has been marred by rows over the failure to obtain key documents including ones regarding meetings between Salmond and Sturgeon.

In a bombshell submission to Holyrood, Salmond accused his successor of misleading Parliament and breaching the ministerial code of conduct.

She accused him of peddling conspiracy theories.

The inquiry has decided not to publish the Salmond submission despite it being reported in the media.

The move was branded “farcical” by Salmond, who is said to be considering a press conference this week instead of appearing.

Sturgeon is to give evidence next week and her husband, SNP chief executive Peter Murrell, will appear today.
