Salmon product sold in Ireland urgently recalled due to detection of meningitis-causing bacteria

An Irish salmon product has been recalled over fears it contains a meningitis-causing bacteria.

Burren Smokehouse has issued a recall on one of its products after Listeria monocytogenes was detected.

The public are being advised not to eat three pack sizes of the producer's Smoked Irish Organic Salmon.

Symptoms of Listeria infection can include vomiting, persistent fever and neck stiffness, and, in rare cases, it could cause meningitis.

What is Listeria? Explanation of the harmful bacteria

A statement from the Food Safety Authority said: "Burren Smokehouse is recalling batches of Smoked Irish Organic Salmon due to the low level detection of Listeria monocytogenes.

"Consumers are advised to check their fridges and freezers for the implicated batch."

The pack sizes affected are 90g, 180g and 500g, and they have a batch code of either 291/03 or 29103.

Consumers are being advised to not eat the product, while businesses are being asked to remove them from sale.

Pregnant women, babies and people with weakened immune systems are more vulnerable to the bug.

A spokeswoman for Burren Smokehouse told the Irish Mirror: "Just to let you know that all of the limited number of customers affected have been contacted.

"We follow our Food Safety Management Procedures and guidelines from SFPA.

"We the management of the Burren Smokehouse have no further comment to make."

According to SafeFood, people can help avoid Listeria contamination in food by:

  • Washing all fruit, vegetable and salad before using them
  • Cooking food fully and serve it when it is still very hot
  • Making sure that their fridge is at 5°C or below
  • Putting chilled food in the fridge straight away and eat it as soon as possible
  • Throwing out food that has passed the ‘use by’ or ‘best before’ date
  • Keeping cooked food and raw food away from each other

The infection live in meat, milk, butter, cream, yogurt and vegetables.

Uncooked food that is kept in the fridge can have Listeria, as well as goods that are cooked before they are sold.

The Burren Smokehouse is a family-run business that was set up in 1989.
