Sally Rooney's Normal People tops lockdown bestseller list

Sally Rooney's novel Normal People has topped a list of best-selling books bought by Londoners during lockdown.

The 29-year-old Irish author’s 2018 Man Booker Prize long-listed work - — about the complicated romantic relationship between schoolfriends Connell and Marianne — was the most purchased book on Amazon between March 23 and May 11.

A critically acclaimed BBC Three adaptation of the book remains one of the most-watched series during lockdown — with 16.2 million people viewing it on BBC iPlayer in a week. The show stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal.

Rooney’s debut novel Conversations With Friends was the tenth most bought novel.

Completing the top three most bought books are Where The Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens and 2019 Man Booker Prize-winning novel Girl, Woman, Other by Bernardine Evaristo.

Londoners have been buying thousands of cookery books. Joe Wicks’s books Lean In 15 and the Fat Loss Plan: 100 Quick Recipes feature in the top 50 bestselling list in all four areas of London.
