Sally Dynevor and Michael Le Vell nearly quit Corrie to set up a rival soap

Coronation Street favourites Sally and Kevin Webster almost left the show for their own soap.

The pair, played by Sally Dynevor and Michael Le Vell, have been popular members of the ITV soap's cast for decades.

Now, Sally Dynevor has revealed when speaking to the Soap From The Box podcast that the pair almost left the soap to get their own show.

Former producer Terry Wood is said to have wanted to create a spin-off series for Sally and Kevin Webster.

As reported by Manchester Evening News, Sally said: "There was talk of it. Tony Wood came up with the idea that we should leave the show and set up a new show.

"I'm so glad we didn't. If it hadn't gone very well, where would we be now?"

Dynevor has played Sally since 1986 and has remained in the Manchester-set soap opera since, with the actress recently receiving an MBE from the Queen on the New Year's Honours list for her services to drama.

The actress also spoke on the podcast about how her relationship with Michael has developed along with Sally Webster's relationship with Kevin, who remain close friends despite divorcing on-screen.

"Michael and I are very close and Sally and Kevin were married for 25 years," noted the actress.

"They were happy for most of those years, so I love the fact the writers have made Sally still concerned about Kevin and vice versa."

Sally has been married in recent years to taxi driver Tim Metcalfe, while Kevin is now in a relationship with fellow mechanic and Sally's best friend Abi Franklin.

The former couple's daughters Rosie and Sophie Webster are no longer on the show.

This week on the soap, Abi will continue to find trouble in her battle against the evil property developer Ray, while Leanne Batersby continues to struggle in the wake of son Oliver's death.

However, could adopted son Simon Barlow be the one to pull her back from the brink of disaster?

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV.
