The embattled Sydney property developer Salim Mehajer has launched a glitzy promotional video featuring himself asking if people “dream of being successful” and “making it to the top”.

The Dream – motivational video, which features expensive cars and Mehajer in a suit and sunglasses, asks: “Do you dream of becoming an inspiration to millions of people out there?”

Over stirring music the property developer and former deputy council mayor steps out of a white Rolls Royce with the voiceover asking: “Do you think you’ll ever make it to the top?”

“Well let me tell you that if you don’t dream then you’re setting yourself up for failure,” it continues. “With no target there is nothing to aim at, nothing to achieve. There’ll be nothing to motivate you to keep going, to work harder, to work outside the box, to be creative, to fight.”

The video was launched on Mehajer’s Facebook page on Saturday night. Channel Nine’s A Current Affair is promoting a story scheduled for Monday night dubbed “Mehajer the maniac”. A promotional clip appears to show Mehajer angrily shouting on the phone.

Mehajer’s Facebook pages promises the “full episode” of his dream video will be released on 21 October.

Mehajer’s flamboyant lifestyle hit the headlines last year after his extravagant wedding closed down a Sydney street.

The lavish wedding featured a motorcade of luxury sports cars worth $50m, a jet fly-past and Mehajer arriving at the ceremony in one of four helicopters that landed in a local park. Since then controversy has followed.

Several of Mehajer’s business dealing have been before the courts and last year he had a charge of intimidation dismissed in relation to allegations he made threats to Bruce Herat, the father of a Lindt cafe siege survivor.

Mehajer lost his position as Auburn deputy mayor and the western Sydney council was sacked in February, with a public inquiry investigating allegations some councillors made planning and development decisions that benefited themselves and family members.

In July he was ordered not to approach his wife under the terms of a provisional apprehended violence order.

The climax of the two-and-a-half-minute “Dream” video shows an elderly lady reading a newspaper headline about Mehajer with a picture from his wedding day alongside the headline: “Sack them all”.

With the lady giving Mehajer dubious looks, the voiceover says: “Not everyone will like you. Some people will try to put you down; to discredit you; to backstab you.”

She leaves the cafe without her mobile phone, which Mehajer dashes over to pick up and return to her.

“Just be yourself, be genuine and dream, dream because you are in control of your dream,” the voiceover continues. “Dream because you have the right to. Dream because you can.”
