Former property developer Salim Mehajer will face a Sydney court this morning charged with breaching his bail conditions two weeks after his release from a prison in southern New South Wales.
The former deputy mayor of Auburn walked free from Cooma Correctional Centre last month after serving an 11-month jail sentence for electoral fraud.
The 32-year-old was arrested at his Lidcombe home in western Sydney on Monday afternoon after he allegedly contacted witnesses in cases before the courts.
Last week, Mr Mehajer faced Parramatta Court and requested changes to his bail conditions, including that he would be allowed access to a mobile phone for "safety reasons".
The former businessman also asked for some other bail variations, including that he be allowed to live at home without his mother, and for access to social media site Instagram.
He spent the night behind bars at Burwood Police Station, and is expected to learn whether his requested variations to his bail will be granted when he faces Burwood Court today.
Mr Mehajer is fighting allegations he staged a 2017 car crash in which his Mercedes slammed into another car just before he was due to appear in court.
Police claim he deliberately crashed his luxury car to avoid facing trial for the alleged assault of a taxi driver.
Last month, Mr Mehajer was hit with fresh charges over allegations he nominated another person as the driver of his car when it was clocked speeding in 2012 and 2013.
He made headlines after his lavish 2015 wedding temporarily closed a western Sydney street without council permission, sparking anger from local residents.
