Salguero: Tannehill viewed as a back-up by “most teams”

Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald detailed yesterday some notable details surrounding the current state of affairs regarding the Miami Dolphins and quarterback Ryan Tannehill. The team, according to Salguero, is trying to trade Tannehill for whatever they may be able to fetch in a trade scenario.

There’s just one problem: the league doesn’t seem to buy in on Tannehill being a starter. At all. This snippet from Salguero paints a pretty dark picture.

“Tannehill is not likely to be considered a starting quarterback for most teams (except Miami the past seven seasons) because of his past inability to overcome issues of pocket awareness, instincts, movement within the pocket, anticipation and other smaller things.”

Ouch. Here’s the thing, though. They aren’t wrong. Tannehill’s peak came five years ago (2014), as a third year passer with under coach Joe Philbin.

In the time since, we’ve seen Tannehill continue to take bad sacks, continue to struggle with setting plays at the line of scrimmage and continue to make a handful of baffling throws each and every week.

Add in the injury issues Tannehill has now experienced (knee, shoulder) these past few years and it’s hard to blame any team for not wanting to put their eggs in the Tannehill basket.

Miami can buy themselves sometime before making a decision, as there is plenty of other fat to trim off this roster and salary cap. The team’s first domino, DE Andre Branch fell yesterday.

But Miami’s resolve in getting a return for Tannehill will be greatly tested, as they have little leverage in trying to move Ryan, a receding talent.
