Salguero: Potential for Miami to trade Reshad Jones is real

If you thought the Dolphins’ roster purge was bad before, just wait until after June 1st. This landmark date stands with significance: it’s the moment in which safety Reshad Jones’ contract becomes an easier pill to swallow for the Dolphins. If they were to try to move him off the roster, that is.

And, according to the Miami Herald’s Armando Salguero, Dolphins fans should not be surprised if the Dolphins really do try to trade Jones between June 1st and the start of the season.

Why? Jones’ cap number for 2019 sits over $17M, so it’s understandable from the perspective that Jones is a big hit against the cap. But, let’s be honest, the cap doesn’t matter for Miami in 2019 anyway. There’s ample room to operate.

The unfortunate reality is Jones, 31-years old, doesn’t fit into the team’s long-term plans given his cost, age and durability.

Reshad has been one of a select few reliable and under-appreciated Dolphins for the majority of this decade, making this a difficult and bittersweet piece of the rebuilding process. That is, of course, assuming it comes to reality after June 1st.

Expect the Dolphins to take a stance similar to the one they took late in the process with Robert Quinn: actively looking for suitors but also willing to bring back Reshad if they don’t find what they feel is appropriate value on the market.

Jones has multiple years left on his contract and his value shouldn’t be compromised for in the first round of trade attempts.
