Salguero: Josh Sitton expects to be released

Yesterday, the Miami Herald’s Armando Salguero ran his 2019 NFL Combine preview. But one of the most interesting nuggets pulled from the article stems from the expectation surrounding one of Miami’s veteran players.

In Salguero’s piece, he talks about how Miami’s players are at the tipping point and need to know what the Dolphins intend to do with them. There are mentions of free agents like Cameron Wake and Ja’Wuan James. And there are mentions of under contract players like DeVante Parker and Robert Quinn.

But Salguero’s verbiage around offensive guard Josh Sitton caught some attention:

“…Sitton expects to be cut…”

Just a few days ago, we looked at whether or not the Dolphins should be placing Sitton on the chopping block. Considering his financial implications, the argument could be made either way for the former Packer and Bear.

The expectation of Sitton himself seems to fall in line with our own deduction: Sitton is a player who can help a team right now, but Miami isn’t looking to win immediately in 2019.

And with a $5M balance on the line for 2019, it will be hard to argue with the Dolphins that parting ways with an established veteran who spent nearly the entire season last year on injured reserve has any downsides.

Sitton, who will be 33-years old this summer, has started 138 games in his NFL career. But he hasn’t started 16 games since 2015, so Sitton will likely be facing a diminished value on the open market, provided the Dolphins finalize parting ways with him in the coming weeks.
