Salguero: Dolphins willing to pay up to facilitate Robert Quinn trade

This is about as “new” as we’ve ever seen from the Miami Dolphins, at least in recent memory. Just days after the Dolphins surrendered $5M in 2019 cash to help finalize a deal to send quarterback Ryan Tannehill to the Tennessee Titans, the team is reportedly open to paying to make another player go away. That is the news according to The Miami Herald’s Armando Salguero.

This time, it is veteran defensive end Robert Quinn, who flopped in his first season in Miami and comes with a hefty price tag for the 2019 NFL season.

Quinn, who received a roster bonus of $1.1M at the end of last week, is on Miami’s chopping block thanks to a total cash value of $12.9M next season. The Dolphins would prefer to have Quinn off their books, but the front office clearly feels there is enough of a market to hold out hope.

And so the games begin. The Dolphins have to hope someone swings and misses on enough free agent targets that they give up and pay for Quinn. Getting a veteran pass rusher for a future draft selection and a price reduction on the salary cap certainly sounds good, but time will tell if Miami will land a return worth pulling the trigger on.

This ploy is just the latest in a series of new philosophies Miami general manager Chris Grier has implemented this off-season, hoping to free cash and add draft picks for the future.

Fingers crossed Grier’s magic lands more of each in trading Quinn, even if it means paying for it with unused cash in 2019.
