Salford shooting victim is 'extremely fortunate' he wasn't killed police say

A man who was shot in his car by a hitman at traffic lights suffered serious but not life threating injuries - while his gunman is still at large.

It's only by 'extreme fortune' and the 'swift actions' of emergency crews that the shooting in Salford wasn't fatal, GMP said.

The victim, in his 30s, was shot in the upper torso next to his son as they sat at traffic lights on on Eccles New Road at the junction of Langworthy Road.

The gunman, who was on a motorbike, sped away from the scene.

No arrests have been made, police confirmed.

It is understood the victim drove himself to Salford Royal Hospital following the shooting.

The child, aged around 10-years-old, was uninjured.

Security was ramped up at Salford Royal Hospital following the shooting.

Police said they are treating the incident as a targeted attack.

They said there is no wider threat to the community.

Superintendent Marcus Noden of GMP’s Salford District said: “Our thoughts remain with the victim and the child who was present during this terrible incident.

“It is only by extreme fortune and the swift actions of the emergency services that this shooting didn’t prove to be fatal.

“For a child to be witness to this type of incident makes the situation even worse.

“We have a specialist team dedicated to this investigation. Many lines of enquiry are being followed and I would like to take this opportunity to encourage anyone with information to contact us.

“We cannot allow a minority of individuals to perpetrate this kind of crime. We need the community’s help to end this kind of violence.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101, quoting incident number 1205 of April 30, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
