Salford shooting: Man arrested over attempted assassination of dad in 'A Team gang feud'

Police investigating the attempted assassination of a dad in front of his 11-year-old son in Salford have made an arrest.

The 36-year-old victim was blasted with a handgun from close range as he waited at traffic lights on Tuesday afternoon.

He managed to drive himself to hospital where his young son raised the alarm with medics at A&E.

The child, who was in the front passenger seat, has been left traumatised but fortunately suffered only minor injuries, including a perforated eardrum.

Police said the would-be assassin was a passenger on a motorbike that pulled up beside the victim's Seat Leon at the junction of Eccles New Road and Langworth Road at around 2.40pm.

Detectives released a CCTV image of two suspects wearing helmets riding a motorbike on Wednesday.

This afternoon, Greater Manchester Police confirmed they have made a breakthrough in the case and arrested a 29-year-old man on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder.

He remains in custody for questioning.

The Manchester Evening News understands the shooting is being linked to the ongoing feud between Salford gang the A-Team and their rivals.

The dispute erupted in 2014 and resulted in a series of shootings, a grenade attack, machete attack and a murder.

It is also understood Tuesday's attack could be linked to a shooting in Ordsall in February when a gunman blasted the wrong house in Howard Street, off Eccles New Road. Two people were inside, but no one was hurt.

Detective Chief Inspector Amber Waywell, of GMP’s Major Incident Team, is leading the investigation.

She said: "We currently have a man in custody arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder and he will be interviewed by detectives later today.

"Our enquiries remain ongoing and I want to continue to urge anybody with information about the shooting to please contact police."

Anybody with information should contact police on 0161 856 2491 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
