Salford schoolchildren discover mystery GMP stab vest buried in field

A group of inquisitive schoolchildren discovered an old police stab-proof vest buried in a field in Salford.

The pupils, from North Walkden Primary, were out walking with mum Lyndsey Chidgey on Sunday, April 18, when they made the surprising find.

They were playing together in Ashtons Field, off Cleggs Lane, Little Hulton, when one of them spotted a carrier bag partially buried under the grass.

When they dug it up they discovered the vest, which appeared to have been damaged before being stuffed into the bag and buried in a hole.

Police say they are still investigating to find out where the vest came from.

"At first we didn't know what it was," Lyndsey explained.

"We were all out on a walk and we spotted it. We pulled it out to see what it was and I explained to them what we'd found.

"We took it home with us in a plastic bag. I was very surprised to find it but the police were there really quickly to pick it up."

After finding the vest, Lyndsey called 101 and officers arrived later that day to pick it up, they also spent some time thanking the children for their help.

"They came out on the night to see the kids," Lyndsey added.

"They came in their car and they gave them all certificates as a thank you. They put the kids in the car and put the siren on, which they loved.

"It was really great, the kids really liked it."

The reason for the vest being buried is currently unknown and police say they are trying to find out where it came from.

A spokesperson for GMP said: "On Sunday, April 18, officers attended an address in Worsley following the reported discovery of a stab vest in a field by Clegg's Lane, Little Hulton.

"The property was recovered and enquiries are ongoing to establish the origin."
