Salford’s River Irwell 'turned into bubble bath' as foam leaves locals bemused

A mystery white foam has transformed a city river into “bubble bath” overnight.

Concerned residents in Salford woke up to find a blanket of the mysterious substance on the River Irwell on Tuesday morning.

It is still unclear what the substance is and where it came from.

Photographs on social media showed the foam floating along the river, with one Twitter user saying: “Bizarre foam in the River Irwell this morning. Something’s leaking bubble bath.”

Another user said: “This is the River Irwell this morning! What on Earth has happened and how has it affected the wildlife on and around this river?”

An Environment Agency spokesman said: "The Environment Agency is aware of foam pollution in the River Roch and downstream in the River Irwell in Manchester.

"We are currently on site investigating and are working with partners to resolve the incident."

He added they were "grateful for the public response in reporting the incident".

Such incidents can be shared with its 24 hour hotline by calling 0800 80 70 60.
