Salford residents warned over scam texts claiming to offer council tax refund

Salford residents are being urged to stay vigilant against scam texts claiming to offer a council tax refund.

The town hall said there has been a ‘spate’ of the messages sent to residents which go on to asks for bank details.

A council spokesman warned they would never texts residents to confirm their bank details in this way.

One of the text reads: “COUNCIL TAX .We  recalculated your council tax. You are owed *** due to over payment. Click secure link ************ to claim refund.”

Salford council officials posted a warning on its website, urging anyone who receives this kind of message to inform the local police about the scamers impersonating town hall or valuation office staff.

They say: “Never give your bank details over the phone if you are not sure who you are dealing with.”

“Never click on any links, download attachments or reply to text messages if you are not sure they are genuine.”

Anyone who suspects they might have been a victim can get information or report the incident at the gov.uk website.
