Salford Red Devils are leading the chase to sign in-demand Widnes Vikings winger Deon Cross.
Rugby League Live can reveal the Red Devils, who confirmed the signing of Brisbane Broncos halfback Brodie Croft on Monday, are in pole position to sign the speedster, who has scored an impressive 13 tries in 15 appearances for the Vikings this season.
They face competition from other clubs for his services though, with several Super League rivals also in pursuit of the impressive 25-year-old.
Cross has spent his entire career to date outside Super League but has caught the eye with a standout try-scoring record.
At the Vikings, he has scored 19 tries in 21 outings and adapted to life in the second-tier impressively. In total, he has scored 44 tries in 78 professional appearances for Rochdale, Barrow and more recently Widnes.
That has seen Cross attract admirers from Super League including Salford, who recently re-signed winger Rhys Williams to a new deal.
Grand Final winner Joe Burgess is also on their books and the club is understood to have completed a deal to sign Leigh Centurions winger Matty Russell, but with Ken Sio and Krisnan Inu both off-contract, the Vikings are beginning to work on new recruits while freeing up quota spots in the process.
Cross, who can also play at centre, would become the latest addition at Salford ahead of next season. The Red Devils are expected to add additions to their pack ahead of the 2022 season too, with Lee Mossop confirming his immediate retirement from the game and Sebastine Ikahihifo set to return to Huddersfield.
That has left the Red Devils looking for new forwards, with several targets in mind.
