Salford Red Devils and Wigan Warriors discuss pre-season collaboration

Salford Red Devils coach Richard Marshall has outlined the club's pre-season plans - including talks over opposed sessions with two Super League rivals.

The new Red Devils chief is getting to grips with his squad ahead of the season, with several of his players noting the intensity of training.

Now, Marshall is hoping to put his squad through their paces against two of Super League's big-hitters.

Talks with Wigan Warriors and Marshall's former club, St Helens, over opposed sessions have been held, while he also revealed that a potential pre-season friendly with Championship side Swinton Lions was being considered.

Wigan have yet to outline any of their plans ahead of the season, with the club still currently in lockdown due to an outbreak of Covid-19. St Helens will play Leigh Centurions in Tommy Makinson's Testimonial game on March 13th.

"We've nothing confirmed at the moment, there's a couple of Covid situations knocking about," he said.

"But at the same time, we've had a chat with St Helens about an opposed session and also Wigan. They're not signed off atm but fingers crossed we can get them then.

"There's a few games there and possibly Swinton if one of them don't work out."

Meanwhile, Marshall said there are no major injury concerns the club's medical team is currently contending with.

"We've got a couple of niggles, a couple of calf strains, but nothing too serious at the moment.

"The pre-season has been pretty intense and a few times the sport scientists have had to hold me back a little bit. You want to stamp your own authority and there's a lot to do but at times you have to be guided by the science.

"But we're not in too much of a tough spot injury-wise"
