Salford City confirm Gary Bowyer as club's new manager until end of League Two season

Salford City has confirmed Gary Bowyer as the club's new manager until the end of the season.

The 49-year-old has joined the Ammies with the club sitting ninth in League Two and six points from the play-offs.

Salford parted company with former boss Richie Wellens yesterday.

Wellens had only been appointed in November after leaving League One side Swindon Town to replace Graham Alexander.

Former Blackburn Rovers, Blackpool and Bradford City boss Bowyer's first game in charge of the Ammies is poised to be the clash on the road against Exeter City this weekend.

Bowyer said: “I’m delighted to be here, I’ve got to first and foremost thank Wayne Rooney, Darren Wassall at Derby County for being so helpful to allow me to come here.

"Obviously today is a case of meeting the players and setting the expectations of what we expect of them from now until the end of the season.

“We want them to be playing aggressive football both with and without the ball, and have a right good go at these remaining 11 games.

"We have an opportunity like everybody else in this league to try and force our way into the reckoning to try and get into the play offs and see if we can do that.”

Bowyer will be assisted in the role by Warren Joyce and Darron Gibson.

He has recently been as an academy coach at Derby County.

And the Rams has confirmed that once his spell with the Ammies has come to a conclusion at the end of the season, he will return to his role at Pride Park.

A statement on Derby's website read: "Derby County Academy coach Gary Bowyer has been appointed as the new manager of Sky Bet League Two side Salford City until the end of the 2020/21 season.

"Once the season has concluded, he will revert back to his role within the Rams' Academy.

"Bowyer, who is 49, was appointed as the Rams’ Professional Development Phase Coach ahead of the 2020/21 season to begin his second spell as a coach in the club’s youth set-up.

"His primary role saw him assist Senior Professional Development Phase Coach Pat Lyons in the running of Derby’s Under-23 side.

"Derby County would like to wish Gary every success in the remainder of the season at Salford City and look forward to welcoming him back to his role in the summer."
