Salford City co-owner Gary Neville hits out at Premier League transfer window spend as EFL clubs fight for survival

Former Manchester United captain and Salford City co-owner Gary Neville has hit out at Premier League teams after they spent £1.24bn in the summer transfer window whilst EFL clubs continue to fight for survival.

Clubs below the Premier League continue to struggle due to the financial impact of COVID-19 without supporters in stadiums.

League One and League Two clubs, in particular, are feeling the pinch, with many predicting that clubs will soon enter administration and further financial difficulty.

As yet, a rescue package with the Premier League or UK government is yet to agreed, despite Prime Minister Boris Johnson suspending all pilot events to welcome a select number of supporters back into football stadiums.

In reality, it's unlikely fans will be back into grounds until March 2021, which has seen the likes of Shrewsbury Town and Charlton Athletic plead for a rethink on social media.

Neville, of course, owns League Two outfit Salford City alongside the rest of the 'Class of 92' including brother Phil Neville, Nicky Butt, David Beckham, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs, as well as Singaporean businessman Peter Lim.

With Premier League clubs spending big this summer once again, he issued a timely reminder that EFL clubs are still in the mire.

Taking to Twitter after Sky Sports reported that top-flight clubs had spent £1.24bn this summer on more than 100 players, he wrote : "That “Covid Financial Hole“ not materialising!! #EFLrescuepackage"

The Ammies were installed as among the pre-season favourites for the League Two title by the bookmakers and currently sit third in the fourth tier of English football.

The Moor Lane side have had an unbeaten start to the League Two campaign having picked up draws against Exeter City and Forest Green Rovers and wins against Grimsby Town and Stevenage.
