Salford City claim first ever Football League win as co-owner Paul Scholes watches on

Salford City beat Stevenage 2-0 on Saturday lunchtime to make a perfect start to their time in the football league.

The Ammies were taken over by ex-Manchester United legends Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt in 2014, while David Beckham purchased a 10% share in the club in January this year.

Since the takeover the only way has been up for Salford, and they have won promotion four times in five seasons to go all the way from the Premier League Division North up to League Two.

Last season they beat AFC Fylde 3-0 in the National League playoff final and some believe they could even win promotion yet again from League Two this season.

In front of 3,416 fans at their Moor Lane stadium in Saturday's early game they shot temporarily at least to the top of the table as two goals from Emmanuel Dieseruvwe gave them a deserved victory.

Dieseruvwe opened the scoring after 29 minutes after sliding in to meet Scott Wiseman's cross from eight yards out.

Salford dominated the contest and got a second just after half-time when Dieseruvwe netted again after converting following a goalmouth scramble.

He had two opportunities to complete a hat-trick but wasted a header and a chance from close-range, while Stevenage's best opportunity to get back in the game saw Kurtis Guthrie's 20-yard effort fly over the bar.

Paul Scholes was in attendance to see the win, but none of the other owners were able to make the match due to other commitments.

Salford will be hoping to continue their good start to season when they travel to Crawley Town for their second game in League Two on Saturday, and they then face an intriguing home tie against Championship club Leeds United on Tuesday 13th.
