Sales rise at Indian restaurants firm behind Masala Zone

The owner of London curry chain Masala Zone on Tuesday defied gloom in the restaurant sector and posted higher sales and profits.

MW Eat, also behind Indian restaurants Chutney Mary and Veeraswamy, said turnover rose 6% to £27 million in the year to March 25.

Pre-tax profits edged up to £4.1 million from £3.8 million.

The growth comes despite difficulties in the industry that rivals have suffered from, including weak consumer confidence, higher ingredient costs, and rising wages. Last year saw chains such as Jamie’s Italian and Carluccio’s restructure and shut a number of sites.

MW Eat’s chairman Ranjit Mathrani, who founded the business with his wife in 1989, said both Brits and tourists from India were impressed by authentic and quality food, and interesting restaurant interiors.

He warned that his biggest Brexit-related concern is future recruitment. Mathrani said: “The government will need to adopt a pragmatic, sensible and flexible immigration policy which recognises business realities.”
