Sales fall at Vauxhall owner Stellantis as global computer chip shortages continue

Sales at Stellantis, the automotive giant behind worldwide brands including Ellesmere Port-based Vauxhall, took a hit because of global computer chip shortages during its third quarter caused by coronavirus pandemic disruption.

The Amsterdam-headquartered group has reported a 14% fall in revenues to €32.6bn as it produced 600,000 fewer vehicles than planned.

Stellantis is a 50:50 joint venture between Italian-American conglomerate Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and the French PSA Group.

Its other brands include Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Citroën, Dodge, DS, Jeep, Lancia, Maserati, Mopar, Opel, Peugeot and Ram.

The third quarter results come after Stellantis confirmed a £100m investment into its Ellesmere Port plant, securing hundreds of jobs at the huge site.

Around 800 people are directly employed by the Vauxhall plant, known for manufacturing the Astra model.

Chief financial officer Richard Palmer said: "Stellantis’ Q3 net revenues reflect the success of our recent vehicle launches, including new electrified offerings, combined with significant commercial and industrial actions executed by our teams in response to unfilled semiconductor orders.

"Full year guidance is therefore confirmed despite continued poor visibility of component supply."
