Salad product sold in Ireland recalled over possible presence of diarrhoea-causing parasite

An Irish salad product has been recalled over fears of a diarrhoea-causing parasite.

Gold River Quality Mixed Salad Leaves are being withdrawn from sale as a precaution due to the possible presence of Cryptosporidium.

All batches and best before dates of the product, which comes from Ireland, are subject to the recall.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland issued the alert and warned of the dangers linked with consuming the parasite.

A spokesman said: "Cryptosporidium is a microscopic parasite which causes cryptosporidiosis, a common form of gastroenteritis.

"Watery diarrhoea is the most common symptom of cryptosporidiosis, which can be particularly serious for young children, older people, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems."

Environmental Health Officers are to notify the food safety chiefs if the affected salad leaves are found to be in use.

Dublin Live has contacted Gold River for comment.
