The Sala boutique collection is made up of four properties. This one, by the Ping River, is one of three at a riverside location. The other two are in Bangkok and Ayutthaya, both on the banks of the Chao Phraya. This compact hotel features 15 guest rooms and suites of four types. The four Deluxe Suites, each measuring 44m², occupy the ground floor.
Atmosphere: Satisfied
An aromatic scent greets guests as they enter. While the hotel's two sister waterside properties offer magnificent views of historical temples, Sala Lanna's waterfront faces bustling markets. Inside, the suite is a stylish haven.
Location: Satisfied
The hotel is located on the east bank of the Ping River. Taxis are easy to find in the area. Walking to Ton Lam Yai, Warorot and the flower markets on the other side of the waterway is easy, thanks to a nearby footbridge.
Service quality: Satisfied
The official check-in time is 3pm. I arrived an hour earlier but got my room with no hassle. The hotel has an app called Pocket Concierge which allows you to access various services via your mobile phone. When I went to the restaurant for dinner, I found the waiting staff to be attentive and energetic. However, at breakfast the next morning, there seemed to be nobody working except a young intern.
Cleanliness: So-so
My room was tidy but not neat. Common areas, except the lobby, seemed neglected. Fallen leaves were everywhere on the riverside deck, with accumulated shoe marks on certain spots. Rubbish was strewn along the water's edge. For a hotel in this price range, this was unexpected.
Facilities: Satisfied
My suite came with a sofa bed, air-con that did not blow directly into my face and a glass-walled bathroom equipped with a stand-alone bathtub. In addition to the riverside mini pool, there is a larger one on the rooftop. Complimentary Wi-Fi was good but at 10.50am the next day the password became invalid.
F&B: Satisfied
The à la carte breakfast offers five choices. The French toast I chose was not bad. For dinner, I had baked sea bass fillet served with risotto, which was delicious. I also recommend the apple tart.
Guest safety: Satisfied
The building has three levels. The suite has a smoke detector and a small safety deposit box.
Environmental & social concerns: Satisfied
LED lights are used at some spots in the guest room. The keycard cuts off the in-room power supply. The bathroom makes good use of sunlight. Drinking water comes in glass bottles, shower gel and shampoo in refillable ceramic containers.
The hotel doesn't have a spa. But there are many massage shops in the city.
Rates may differ depending on when you book. For the fourth weekend of March, for example, the lowest price for a Standard room is 3,336 baht. For the Deluxe Suite, it's 5,296 baht. Breakfast is included.
