Sakoltee Phattiyakul has resigned as Bangkok deputy governor to run for the governorship as an independent in the city elections tentatively set for late May.

He submitted his resignation letter on Monday. It took effect immediately.

Mr Sokoltee posted on his Facebook page on Monday morning, explaining his move.

"For nearly four years I have served in the position of Bangkok deputy governor, days pass by very quickly. For me, they are not days of work, but days of happiness. Everyday, I learn new things, solve problems and do the work under my responsibility, particularly taking complaints and grievances from the people of Bangkok. I and Bangkok Metropolitan Administration officials have tried our best to handle them," he wrote.

Mr Sakoltee thanked the prime minister and the Bangkok governor for giving him a chance to work and gain valuable experience. He also thanked all BMA personnel for their cooperation.

He said many good things had happened to the city of Bangkok and he believed he was capable of doing "better" for city people.

"In the forthcoming gubernatorial election, I am ready and volunteer to run as an independent for the post of Bangkok governor. In this position, I will use my experience to do what I want to see done, and would like to ask Bangkok people to give me a chance," Mr Sakoltee said.

Mr Sakoltee said he would soon officially declare his challenge for the job, and his policies.
