Sajid Javid would be a 'danger' to people in Bristol if he became Prime Minister, Lib Dem claims

Sajid Javid would pose a “clear danger” to Bristol residents if he were to become prime minister, it has been claimed.

Mr Javid, who grew up in Easton, is the home secretary and MP for Bromsgrove in Worcestershire.

But his announcement on Monday that he is to stand in the Conservative Party’s leadership race has prompted a verbal attack from a Liberal Democrat member.

James Cox, who will compete for the Bristol West seat in the next general election, criticised Mr Javid’s record as home secretary.

Mr Cox said: "His home office agenda has already damaged the lives of many and his presence in Number 10 would present a clear danger to many Bristolians.

“We need a prime minister who will end the hostile environment, not use it as a blueprint going forward."

Mr Cox claimed Mr Javid had made life difficult for EU nationals, attacked civil liberties and shown contempt for asylum seekers.

In a Twitter post yesterday, Mr Javid said that the priority for the new prime minister - after Theresa May steps down on June 7 - should be to deliver Brexit.
