Sajid Javid to make coronavirus rules statement on Monday afternoon

England's Health Secretary Sajid Javid is to make a statement about the new Omicron Variant of Covid in the UK and the new rules needed to fight it.

Mr Javid will make a statement in the House of Commons on Monday afternoon.

The worrying new variant of Covid was found in South Africa last Wednesday and has since been detected around the world, with three cases in the UK.

This weekend the Government brought in travel bans for 10 southern African nations in a bid to slow the arrival of Omcron in the UK - with countries added to the red list.

Anyone who returns from countries including South Africa and Angola must quarantine in a hotel for 10 days.

On Saturday Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that there would be new rules needed to combat Omicron - including the return of mandatory masks in shops and on public transport.

Anyone coming into the UK will also need to take a PCR test.

On Monday, Sajid Javid will detail new rules to MPs in the House of Commons - before they come into force on Tuesday morning.

MPs will have a chance to vote on the law within 28 days.

Omicron is causing concern because of the high number of mutations in the virus - twice as many as in the Covid variant.

There are fears it can spread much more rapidly and could get round vaccine protection.
