Sajid Javid today told EU citizens living in London that the Home Office was “looking for ways” to grant them permanent status in this country whatever happens with Brexit.

In an open letter to Europeans in the UK, the Home Secretary said he understood the anxiety that the turmoil over Britain’s departure deal might be causing.

But he said he wanted everyone to take up the right to live here permanently and would do everything possible to help them complete the application process required.

Mr Javid, right, added: “I want you to know how much we want you to stay regardless of whether the UK leaves the EU with or without a deal. Let me be clear, we are looking for reasons to grant people status and we want everyone eligible to get the status they are entitled to receive.

“All people need to do is complete a three-step application with a laptop, tablet or mobile device to prove your identity, confirm you live in the UK and declare any criminal convictions. As Home Secretary, I’m determined that no one is left behind.”

The Government’s EU Settlement Scheme officially launches tomorrow. It has been set up to enable EU citizens living here to apply, free of charge, for permanent status after Brexit.

Mr Javid said that up to £9 million was being made available for “vulnerable people”, such as the disabled and the homeless, to help them apply.
