Sajid Javid called out by GMB's Susanna Reid and Adil Ray for avoiding interview on Downing Street party

Sajid Javid came under fire during his appearance on Good Morning Britain today.

Presenter Susanna Reid and co-host Adil Ray called out the Health Secretary on Wednesday morning after he missed his original interview to discuss the alleged Downing Street Christmas party.

Sajid was initially set to speak to the GMB presenters on Tuesday's programme after a video emerged of No 10 staff joking about the alleged party.

However the government minister failed to turn up - and the hosts didn't let it slide.

As Sajid appeared live from Westminster, GMB presenter Adil Ray said: "Mr Javid we were expecting you to join us yesterday, it was a very important day yesterday.

"We had lots of questions to be answered regarding allegations of the Christmas party on Downing Street, and you had some very important health messages to put out aswell.

"And instead you had to resort to Twitter to put those messages out - why didn't you show up yesterday?".

Sajid Javid says he didn't show as he was 'upset and angered' by the leaked video.

"I'm pleased to be here now but the honest truth is the reason I didn't show up yesterday is because like a lot of people I think I was very upset and angry actually by that video and what it looked like," he replied.

"I thought the team at No.10 should have the time and space to respond to it and I'm pleased with the way the Prime Minister has responded by asking for an investigation."

Susanna Reid then proceeded to quiz the Health Secretary on the alleged Christmas party.

"Were you more upset and angered by the video than you were the allegations of rule breaking at No 10?," she asked.

"I think the video itself, the way it looked and the way it came across... It's not about me," Mr Javid stuttered.

"But I think my constituents can see when they think of rightly how they have followed all of the rules throughout the pandemic and they couldn’t see their loved ones, it did anger me and I think there needed to be a full response, and there was.

"There’s going to be an investigation to establish the facts and I don’t want to pre-empt the outcome of that investigation, but I think it’s important there’s now one taking place by actually the most senior civil servant, a very respected individual, very professional.

"He will get to the bottom of this and establish the facts."

Presenter Adil Ray then asked the Health Secretary if he 'accepted' there was a party on Downing Street last December.

"It's pretty obvious there was a party we've heard admission from Allegra Stratton, do you agree there was a party?," Adil quizzed.

Shaking his head, Sajid responded: "Honestly, I don't know...".

Adil then interrupted him to say: "Mr Javid sorry but we're going to waste time here, you watched the video, you were angry and upset about it, but it feels like you still don't think there was a party.

"What were you angry and upset about then?".

Mr Javid then told the GMB presenters that it was the content of the video that angered him and that he hopes the investigation, ordered by Boris Johnson to look into “what took place on December 18”, will 'get to the bottom of it.'

Susanna Reid then asked if the Cabinet Secretary who is investigating was at the alleged party.

The Health Secretary responded: "I have no idea. I wasn't even in government at the time but I do know the Cabinet Secretary is a very professional individual."

Not prepared to let it go, Susanna reiterated: "Can we just establish, so you don't know if the person investigating the party was at the party or not?"

To which Mr Javid responded, "I couldn’t tell you either way, it’s not the kind of information that I would have. In the way you’re asking the question, you’re assuming there definitely was a party and I don’t know that either."

Boris Johnson and his staff have been accused of breaking Covid rules by attending alleged festivities at Downing Street last December.

The Prime Minister's former spokesperson Allegra Stratton, who has since resigned over the video, was captured laughing saying "there was definitely no social distancing".

After the Health Secretary's GMB interview, viewers praised the presenters for their questions.

@Xtrapromo said: "Surprising the Health Secretary ( Sajid Javid) knows nothing about whether a party took place or not.. (makes no sense) Adil and Susanna are doing a great job of holding Sajid to account."

@MullerDonUK added: "Well done and thank you @susannareid100! You've asked the question that was in mind! The guy could clearly not answer! You always ask the questions that are in our minds!"
