Sajid Javid asked to explain why Tory MPs don't wear face masks in the Commons

Sajid Javid has faced awkward questions over why his Tory colleagues decline to wear face coverings in the House of Commons chamber.

The Health Secretary has advised the public to "wear a face covering in crowded and enclosed spaces", but many MPs - including ministers - regularly ignore that advice.

Mr Javid acknowledged the point in a Number 10 press briefing this evening, telling journalists that "we've all got a role to play" in stopping the spread of Covid.

The question came after MPs packed out the Commons this afternoon to pay tribute to former MP James Brokenshire, who lost his battle with cancer earlier this month.

The majority of Tory MPs in the chamber decided not to wear a mask during the sitting.

Asked about the decision, Mr Javid said: "That is a very fair point, we've all got a role to play in this and we, the people standing on this stage, play our public roles and set an example.

"That's a very fair point. I'm sure a lot of people would have heard you."
