Saira Khan goes to police over death threats after revealing she's no longer practising Muslim

Saira Khan has revealed she's gone to the police after receiving death threats following her announcement that she's no longer a practising Muslim.

The former Loose Women panellist, 50, revealed the news in her Mirror column, saying she "pretended to be someone I'm not" to keep her family happy.

And her admission sparked a huge backlash, she says she has received vile abuse from trolls, which she has now gone to the police over.

Taking to her Instagram account on Tuesday night, Saira explained: "Due to the abuse and threats I have received. I have reported this matter to the police as it is regarded as hate crime.

"I am utterly saddened that my decision to live my life how I choose should rest to other's wanting to cause me harm.

"How does my life impact theirs?"

Saira captioned the post: "This cannot happen to other people. It is wrong."

She finished the post with the hashtag #bekind.

Saira had spoken about receiving death threats during an Instagram Live, saying: "I have had death threats... until you come from that background or ethnicity as a woman, you will never understand the barriers the obstacles - the deaths to your life we are about 100 years behind in terms of freedom of speech freedom or individualism, liberty and choice."

The TV star added: "You cannot believe the messages I have received. I am not going to come out and say I practise the religions because I don't.

"I don't believe in certain aspects of the teachings, I believe in gay marriage, and if I stay quiet nothing will change - it's important for me and my truth and my happiness and my choice, for me to demonstrate to my children you have to live your life according to your rules."

She went on: "As long as you are good and kind and not hurting anyone else, and you should not be scared that people are threatening to kill you, you should not be scared they are going to come smash your windows."

In her column Saira said she had been raised in a Muslim household, but had kept quiet about straying from the faith for so many years for fear of upsetting her family.

Saira admitted that many of the best things to happen in her life - from the adoption of a child to her marriage to husband Steve Hyde - have conjured feelings of guilt in her.
