Saints wearing all-black uniforms for Week 8 Cardinals game

It’s going to be a blackout when the Arizona Cardinals visit the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. The Saints will pair their black home jerseys with matching black pants in a game that might feature a return for quarterback Drew Brees from thumb surgery. Notice of this week’s uniform combination was shared in an email sent to season ticket holders.

These black-on-black uniforms have been the Saints’ go-to in recent years; it’s the single most-popular combination since the 2017 season opener, when big-time players like running back Alvin Kamara, cornerback Marshon Lattimore, and right guard Larry Warford joined the team. The Saints have paired their black jerseys with black pants in 17 of their last 43 games, more than any other combination.

For the superstitious, here’s the winning percentage for each of the different uniform combinations the Saints have worn going back to 2006, when Sean Payton was hired as head coach. It includes the regular season and playoffs:

  • White jerseys, white pants: 2-0 (1.000)
  • Color Rush alternates: 5-2 (.714)
  • Black and Gold throwbacks: 2-1 (.667)
  • Black jerseys, gold pants: 23-13 (.639)
  • White jerseys, black pants: 38-25 (.603)
  • Black jerseys, black pants: 38-25 (.603)
  • White jerseys, gold pants: 31-24 (.564)
