Saints waive veteran cornerback Kayvon Webster

The New Orleans Saints began the process of thinning their 90-man roster to just 53 players on Friday by waiving veteran cornerback Kayvon Webster, as first reported by Adam Schefter of ESPN. Webster was signed during training camp as competition for other players on the fringe of the roster, such as Ken Crawley, P.J. Williams, and Justin Hardee. Webster showed above-average tackling ability in the preseason but was sometimes undisciplined in coverage, picking up several ticky-tack pass-interference fouls.

New Orleans was Webster’s fourth team in as many years, spending injury-riddled stops with the Houston Texans in 2018 and Los Angeles Rams in 2017. His career began with the Denver Broncos, where he rose to prominence as an asset on special teams and useful dime cornerback in longtime defensive coordinator Wade Phillips’ scheme. Webster followed Phillips to L.A. but did not enjoy the same success after repeated stints on injured reserve.

Webster being waived is good news for Crawley and Hardee, who were battling with him for one or two roster spots at the bottom of the depth chart. Williams has played well this summer in the slot and could resume his starting gig when the regular season starts, depending on the status of Patrick Robinson. Robinson exited the Saints’ preseason game against the Miami Dolphins on Thursday with an undisclosed injury.
