Saints training camp injury update for Wednesday, Aug. 7

The New Orleans Saints saw a few key pieces return to action on Wednesday, while other players were held out from training camp practice to continue receiving treatment for their injuries.

Players who missed practice Wednesday included:

  • CB T.J. Green
  • DE Wes Horton
  • FB Michael Burton
  • OG Ethan Greenidge
  • RB Matthew Dayes
  • TE Alize Mack
  • TE Garrett Griffin
  • WR Keith Kirkwood

Additionally, second-year offensive tackle Nate Wozniak was waived to open a spot for free agent A.J. Derby.

Two big names were able to suit up after missing time, with defensive lineman David Onyemata filling in next to nose tackle Malcom Brown on the first-team defense. Wide receiver Emmanuel Butler, a rookie standout, also joined practice in pads. Because players were off on Tuesday, the Saints coaching staff opted to run team drills at a walkthrough-level pace, running plays at half speed to limit potential injuries. The strategy worked, and no players exited the practice field with new injuries.

The Saints will help kick off the NFL preseason on Friday, when the Minnesota Vikings fly in for an exhibition game. While some of the Saints superstars like quarterback Drew Brees and running back Alvin Kamara may be held out of the contest, it would be nice to have all hands on deck.
