Saints to wear black home jerseys against Rams in sunny L.A.

The New Orleans Saints will be wearing their black home jerseys and gold pants in their Week 2 road game against the Los Angeles Rams, the team announced Saturday from their official Twitter account. This means they will be wearing their black jerseys in consecutive games to start the regular season. For their part, the Rams will be wearing their all-white uniforms.

With temperatures expected to climb into the low 90’s, the Rams are doing the Saints no favors from a comfort perspective. But considering Saints training camp practices routinely top the high 100’s, the heat is unlikely to become much a factor in Sunday’s kickoff.

The black-and-gold look has, ironically, been an unpopular combination during Saints coach Sean Payton’s tenure. It’s taken a backseat to the pairing of white jerseys with black pants, with the Saints coaches frequently choosing to go with the all-black look in prime-time home games. Still, it’s an opportunity to show off some of the best threads in the NFL.

Here’s the Saints’ winning percentage in each of their different uniform combinations since Payton was hired as head coach:

  • White jersey, gold pants: 33-18, .647
  • White jersey, black pants: 90-56, .616
  • White jersey, white pants: 3-2, .600
  • Black jersey, black pants: 26-21, .553
  • Black jersey, gold pants: 40-48, .455
