Saints sign former Vikings draft pick, Ohio State guard Wyatt Davis

There’s a new arrival for the New Orleans Saints, with former Minnesota Vikings guard Wyatt Davis signing with their 53-man roster. Davis briefly joined the New York Giants practice squad after the Vikings waived him during final roster cuts, but now he’s headed for New Orleans. Giants.com’s Dan Salomone first announced the move.

Davis is the third offensive lineman the Saints have added since the final wave of roster cuts. Backup tackle Tanner Owen was claimed off of waivers from the Buffalo Bills, and reserve guard Drew Desjarlais signed with their practice squad after spending the summer with the New England Patriots. Clearly the Saints saw a need to reinforce the depth chart there.

A corresponding move is on its way to make room for Davis on the active roster. It’s possible the Saints send someone to injured reserve — non-participants from Wednesday’s injury report include wide receiver Tre’Quan Smith, running back Dwayne Washington, left tackle Landon Young, and cornerback Paulson Adebo, though it doesn’t sound like Adebo’s ankle injury is serious.

But let’s circle back to Davis. The right guard was named a unanimous All-American in his final year at Ohio State in 2020 (where he was teammates with Saints first rounder Chris Olave) but couldn’t get on the field for Minnesota as a rookie last year, totaling just 28 snaps exclusively on special teams. That’s not encouraging given they drafted him at No. 86 overall in the third round, but maybe a change of scenery will be good for him.

Update: NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill reports that Davis is replacing Owens on the 53-man roster. Other rostered guards include Andrus Peat, Cesar Ruiz, and Calvin Throckmorton, with Desjarlais and Josh Andrews on the practice squad.
