Saints scouting chief Jeff Ireland raves on LSU’s Foster Moreau

New Orleans Saints assistant general manager/director of college scouting Jeff Ireland was one of 17 credentialed team officials on hand for the LSU Tigers pro day, and he liked what he saw in 2019 NFL Draft prospect Foster Moreau. Larry Holder of the Athletic reported that the Saints were “paying close attention” to Moreau’s showing at the pro day.

“I like him, he’s big,” Ireland said to Luke Johnson of the Times-Picayune of the 6-foot-4, 253 pound tight end. “It’s different when you see a kid on the sideline and you see his size, then you see him in shorts and t-shirts. Man, he’s a big kid, and he moved around pretty well today.”

Moreau only went through positional drills at the pro day, letting his laser-measured numbers from athletic testing at the NFL Scouting Combine speak for themselves. And for good reason: he timed the 40-yard dash in 4.66 seconds and the 20-yard shuttle in 4.11 seconds. Moreau jumped 121 inches broad and 36 and a half inches vertically. He threw up 22 reps on the bench press of 225 pounds for good measure.

Moreau is a prospect to watch in the middling rounds of the draft, likely to be picked in the fifth or sixth round. The Saints have plenty of picks to work with in that range (one in the fifth round, two each in both the sixth and seventh rounds). If they don’t address tight end early in the draft with one of the top prospects, Moreau would make sense as a backup plan.
