Saints schedule visits with several Buckeyes draft prospects

The 2019 NFL Draft is approaching quickly, and the New Orleans Saints are stepping up their efforts to evaluate college prospects and continue to hammer out a draft strategy. Part of the predraft process involves hosting prospects on visits in New Orleans, though teams are allowed just 30 such personal meetings. We’re starting to get an idea of who the Saints may be targeting in this year’s draft after the Ohio State Buckeyes pro day.

Running back Mike Weber has scheduled visits with the Saints, Chicago Bears, Dallas Cowboys, and Pittsburgh Steelers, per Dan Hope of Eleven Warriors. Weber was heavily involved in the Buckeyes offense the last three years, running for 2676 yards and scoring 24 touchdowns on the ground with 455 career attempts. He also caught 54 passes for 297 receiving yards. He didn’t complete all drills at the NFL Scouting Combine, but Weber’s 4.47-second time in the 40-yard dash was a good time for a back of his size (5-foot-9 5/8, 211 pounds).

Additionally, the Saints are scheduled to host wide receiver Parris Campbell before the draft. Campbell has visits with both the Saints and Seattle Seahawks ahead of him, per Garrett Stepien of Buckeye Sports Bulletin. Campbell was just a bit player for Ohio State until his senior season, breaking out in 2018 with 90 receptions for 1063 yards and a dozen touchdown catches. He was a big winner at the combine, timing the 40-yard dash in just 4.31 seconds. Campbell also showcased elite lower-body explosion by jumping 40 inches vertically and 135 inches broad. He’s a well-rounded athlete.

The Saints signed Latavius Murray to replace Mark Ingram in the backfield, but they’ve got little to work with behind him and Alvin Kamara. Adding Weber as an insurance policy would make sense. As for Campbell, the Saints only have one receiver they can trust — another Buckeyes product, incidentally, in Michael Thomas. The competition for four or five other roster spots should be wide open, and Campbell would seriously juice up a group had an underwhelming 2018 season. With so many of their college teammates on the roster already (J.T. Barrett and Marshon Lattimore among them) the Saints should have no trouble vetting these prospects.
