Saints roster moves: Javorius Allen to IR; Travin Dural re-signs

The New Orleans Saints completed four roster moves on Tuesday after a series of free agent tryouts and medical evaluations.

Running back Javorius Allen, originally signed late in May, was designated to the injured reserve list after being held out of the first five practices of training camp. His specific injury was not disclosed, and it’s unclear what happened after he passed the team conditioning test last week.

In his place, the Saints added free agent running back Robert Kelley, who played for Washington in his first three pro years after starring at Tulane. Kelley’s presence on the depth chart shouldn’t factor into whether the Saints are able to sign Theo Riddick, who met with the team earlier this week. Kelley is a limited runner with little passing-down experience, whereas Riddick shares some skills with Alvin Kamara. Riddick is reportedly weighing offers from the Saints and the Denver Broncos.

Additionally, the Saints waived cornerback Chris Campbell with an injury designation. He spent time on the practice squad last season and was a long shot to make the roster.

The Saints brought back former LSU wideout Travin Dural, having released veteran receiver Cameron Meredith on Monday. Saints coach Sean Payton acknowledged that the team thought they could re-sign Dural after releasing him before training camp, saying, “He’s familiar with what we’re doing and we’re low on numbers,” in his post-practice press conference.
