Saints release recently signed RB Zach Zenner

It wasn’t a memorable debut for running back Zach Zenner, the former Detroit Lions backup who signed with the New Orleans Saints almost a week ago. Zenner gained just 1 yard on his only carry against the Chicago Bears in Week 7 and dropped one of the two passes thrown his way (he picked up 6 yards on his single catch of the afternoon).

Per a report from Field Yates of ESPN, Zenner is already on his way out. The Saints released him on Tuesday, opening up a spot on the 53-man roster. It might be a sign that starting running back Alvin Kamara is close to returning from the ankle and knee injuries that sidelined him against Chicago. Alternatively, the Saints could be opening up a roster spot for a new addition or promotion from the practice squad, which already has a vacancy after tight end Dan Arnold was called up before the Bears game.

Another Saints running back did enjoy his day against the Bears defense, however. Latavius Murray made the most of his touches in Chicago, picking up 117 rushing yards and 31 yards as a receiver. He scored on two different touchdown runs, with a third wiped out by a penalty. Even if Kamara is healthy enough to suit up in Week 8 against the Arizona Cardinals, Murray’s performance suggests the Saints can afford to give their starter a little more time to get up to speed.
