Saints re-sign backup offensive tackle/guard James Hurst

Here’s some good news. SiriusXM’s Adam Caplan reports that the New Orleans Saints are re-signing offensive lineman James Hurst, citing Hurst’s agent. Hurst arrived in New Orleans last summer on a veteran’s minimum contract and played more than 400 snaps, mostly as a backup while notching a couple of starts in relief of injured left tackle Terron Armstead. He also filled in at left guard in a pinch.

So bringing him back is smart; the terms of his contract could make the move look even better if it’s another low-cost minimum salary. Hurst first joined the Saints after being released by the Baltimore Ravens, having started the bulk of the 2017 and 2018 seasons at right tackle and left guard, with some action here and there along the line.

That’s valuable depth to add to the roster behind the Saints’ All-Pro bookends. Armstead is entering the final year of his contract, as is right tackle Ryan Ramczyk. The cupboard is kind of bare after them, though, so Hurst should build some confidence in the offensive line as a whole.
