Saints punter Thomas Morstead named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week

New Orleans Saints punter Thomas Morstead was recognized for his impressive performance against the Seattle Seahawks on Wednesday, with the NFL selecting him for NFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors. Morstead, 33, averaged 54 yards per punt against the Seahawks on Sunday and pinned Russell Wilson and the Seattle offense inside their 10-yard line on three separate occasions. That tough starting field position benefited the Saints defense, who were able to put points on the board by forcing, recovering, and returning a Seahawks fumble for a defensive touchdown.

For his part, Morstead said he’s just happy to be affiliated with the sponsors of the award — Head & Shoulders shampoo manufacturers. Morstead has frequently grown his hair out long, often past his shoulders, throughout his Saints career and donated it to charities that create wigs for pediatric cancer patients. It’s a safe bet that he’s familiar with their products.

Besides Morstead, the other players recognized as standouts from Week 3 included:

  • AFC Offensive Player of the Week: Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson
  • AFC Defensive Player of the Week: Jacksonville Jaguars defensive lineman Calais Campbell
  • AFC Special Teams Player of the Week: New England Patriots punter Jake Bailey
  • NFC Offensive Player of the Week: New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones
  • NFC Defensive Player of the Week: Green Bay Packers linebacker Preston Smith
