Saints boss Jim Goodwin full of praise for striker Eamonn Brophy after top match performance against Hibs

Jim Goodwin believes the Buddies are finally starting to see the best of striker Eamonn Brophy.

The striker put in arguably his best performance for the club at Easter Road on Saturday, linking the play well in the final third while also bagging his second goal of the season with a wonderful run and finish.

Goodwin believes the former Killie man is beginning to reach the levels he knew he was capable of when he brought him to St Mirren.

Speaking exclusively to Express Sport, Goodwin said: "I thought Brophy was excellent against Hibs, as he was against Dundee United the weekend before.

"We feel as if now we're starting to get the best out of him. We're getting him fitter and sharper.

"Eamonn is a top striker, he really is and that's why we worked so hard to bring him to the club.

"I've got great belief in him as a player. He's a top boy and he always wants to do well and improve his game all the time.

"He should be on three goals in six games, if the one against Dundee United had stood as it should have. That's a one in two ratio and any striker in the country would be delighted with that strike rate.

"He put some great crosses into the box as well, he's not just all about the goals.

"I'm really pleased for him because I know he does take a huge amount of responsibility on himself and he's very hard on himself when he doesn't get goals.

"I thought his all-round performance against Hibs deserved that goal."

While Goodwin was hugely critical of the decision to award the Easter Road side the penalty that led to Hibs' second goal, the Buddies boss was pleased to come away from the difficult venue with a point in the bag.

He praised his players' determination not to capitulate when Jack Ross' side scored twice in quick succession in the second half, especially as he felt they were wronged again by a key refereeing decision.

Goodwin said: "I'm getting sick of how many decisions go against us and we don't get them at the other end.

"The positives for me are that we didn't give up when we found ourselves behind. We didn't allow the game to get away from us which would have been very easy. It could have gone to 3-1 and 4-1 very quickly.

"We got some good blocks in at key moments, hit the crossbar. We created a lot of chances too.

"We deserved to get the equaliser at the end but it is another big decision that's gone against us at the end of the day that has cost us.

"They're fine margins but we've had three goals chalked off against wrongly.

"People say we're not scoring enough goals but we need to demand more from the officials. They're costing my club points which could cost a hell of a lot come the end of the season. It can be the difference between finishing in the top half or the bottom half."
