Saints are top of the league when it comes to helping foodbank

Generous St Mirren players and staff kicked off the club’s foodbank collection drive with a bumper haul.

Gaffer Jim Goodwin and Saints’ first team stars donated nearly 400 meals to Renfrewshire Foodbank to help feed struggling families across the region.

A fan collection will be held at the Simple Digital Arena ahead of the side’s match with Hamilton today where supporters can add to the impressive 149kg bounty from the club.

Renfrewshire Foodbank’s outgoing manager, Elizabeth Alexander, headed down to St Mirren’s Ralston training base to collect the items and thanked them for their generosity.

She told the Paisley Daily Express: “I would like to thank the club - the players and staff – for their really generous donations.

“We are so grateful for what they have given us and it has really got the ball rolling for the fan collection at the stadium.

“St Mirren fans are always so generous and organise collections a couple of times a year for and each time they do, we get a really amazing response.

“If you can spare anything at all then please bring it along before the match.”

Elizabeth, who finishes up at the foodbank after four and half years shortly, has urged fans to think about handing in some specific supplies that are running low.

“We are currently very low on tinned tomatoes, long life juice, tinned fruit and tinned potatoes, so if you are thinking of donating, these items would be greatly appreciated,” she added.

Volunteers will be stationed at each stand to collect items ahead of the 3pm clash with the Accies.

Buddies fans last held a foodbank collection in March before a 2-1 win over Dundee, where they provided an incredible 1,026.19kg of food — enough for 2,443 meals for people in need in
Renfrewshire.

Earlier this week we reported that hungry children in Renfrewshire have received emergency meals more than 1,000 times in the past five months from the foodbank.
