Signings of Ryan Groy and Marshall Newhouse among 6 moves for Saints

The New Orleans Saints announced six roster moves today, including the signings of veteran offensive linemen Marshall Newhouse and Ryan Groy, who tried out for the team earlier in the week. Newhouse has started 120 games since 2011 (including the playoffs) for six teams, predominantly at left tackle. He most recently appeared in 11 games for the Carolina Panthers in 2018. Groy has appeared in 57 games since 2014 (including the postseason) for the Chicago Bears and Buffalo Bills, spending most of his career at center.

Free agent safety Terrell Williams Jr. also agreed to a contract with New Orleans. His career began last season with the San Francisco 49ers, joining them as an undrafted free agent after starting two years for the Houston Cougars in college. At 6 feet 4 and 212 pounds, he has rare size for the position, but how he’ll perform remains to be seen after a training camp injury ended his rookie season.

There were three corresponding moves to these signings: the waiving of undrafted rookies Mike Herndon (a right guard from Pittsburgh) and Micah Wright (a wide receiver from Maine), and the release of backup right tackle Derek Newton. Each of those players participated in rookie minicamps earlier in May, but the Saints must have seen better prospects.
