Sainsbury’s under fire as supermarket SWAPS Nectar Points offer for invite-only deal

Sainsbury's shoppers are speaking out over a "misleading" email that claims they could convert their Nectar points into more money than they really could.

A email sent to some Nectar loyalty scheme users, called the "Big Points Swap", says that customers could double their points into cash.

The email says that customers could enhance their points with a limited time offer, Birmingham Live reports .

Normally shoppers would get around £10 in vouchers with 2,000 points but the new offer is giving customers £20.

But customers have gone on social media to complain that the Nectar card app is not offering the suggested amount. The new emails have also been going out to a select few customers through an invite only scheme after dropping its regular Double up promotion.

One Twitter user said: "...the email sent to me showed I would get double the value, in the app I'm being offered only 50%."

Another shopper added: "Your email tells me 6,000 points are enhanced to £60 but the app only offers £45,what gives?"

A Nectar spokesperson said, “We regularly test new ways to offer our customers great value on their Nectar points. We’re currently trialling a personalised points swap offer with a small proportion of customers.

“We have identified that some of these customers received an email with incorrect information about the offer available to them. We will be contacting the customers affected to explain and apologise for the confusion this may have caused.”

Customers will need 2,000 points to be eligible and can redeem up to 10,000 points.

Earlier this year The Mirror reported that Sainsbury’s had shaken up its Nectar loyalty scheme so shoppers can now donate their points to a chosen charity.

The supermarket confirmed the launch of a new Nectar Donate option which will work with good causes such as Alzheimer’s Research UK and Macmillan Cancer Support.

Each donated Nectar point will be converted into funding for your chosen organisation without any fees attached.

The minimum donation value is 200 points, equivalent to £1.

This is the same value as what Nectar points are worth if you were to spend them in stores at Sainsbury's.

You get one Nectar point for every £1 spent, with one Nectar point worth 0.5p in return.
