Sainsbury's to scrap plastic bags at aisles across all its supermarkets

Shoppers buying loose groceries and bakery items at Sainsbury's will no longer be able to get free clear plastic bags.

The supermarket is scrapping loose plastic bags for its pick your own aisles and bakery counter, from September.

Bakery customers will be offered free paper bags for loose goods from the counter, but those selecting loose fruit and vegetables from the pick your own sections will have to bring their own bags, or buy a reusable bag made from recycled materials.

Sainsbury's is also pledging to scrap plastic packaging for fruit and vegetables as well as plastic lids from pots of cream.

Black plastic trays will be replaced with recyclable alternatives.

Sainsbury’s CEO Mike Coupe said: "We are absolutely committed to reducing unnecessary plastic packaging in Sainsbury’s stores.

"Our customers expect us to be leading the way on major issues like this, so I am determined to remove and replace plastic packaging where we can and offer alternatives to plastic where packaging is still required to protect a product."
