Sainsbury's to put security guards on doors to challenge shoppers without masks

Sainsbury's has announced it will be putting trained security guards at the front of stores to challenge those who are not wearing masks or who are shopping in groups.

It comes following a successful trial over the weekend, the supermarket said. Chief Executive of Sainsbury's, Simon Roberts, has written to all customers to ask them to play their part in keeping everyone safe. He explained this means always wearing a mask in stores and shopping alone. You are permitted to not wear a mask if you have a physical or mental illness, a condition or impairment and for some other reasons.

While Sainsbury's is asking shoppers to do their part, the store says it has also taken steps to significantly reduce the number of customers allowed in at any one time. And it said it will have more hosts at the front of stores supporting with cleaning and social distancing.

The announcement comes after Morrisons said customers who aren't medically exempt and refuse to wear a mask will be told to leave stores. You can read more about this here.

Chief Executive of Sainsbury's, Simon Roberts, said: "I've spent a lot of time in our stores reviewing the latest situation over the last few days and on behalf of all my colleagues, I am asking our customers to help us keep everyone safe.

"The vast majority of customers are shopping safely, but I have also seen some customers trying to shop without a mask and shopping in larger family groups.

"Please help us to keep all our colleagues and customers safe by always wearing a mask and by shopping alone. Everyone's care and consideration matters now more than ever."

Last week the Welsh Government said it was looking at how safety at supermarkets, shops that are able to remain open, and workplaces can be improved.

Wales' First Minister Mark Drakeford told BBC Wales: "If people go out shopping, I want to be confident that supermarkets are being run in Wales today in the way that they were being run back in March and April.

"I want people to be confident that there are proper controls in the number of people entering supermarkets.

"That there are genuine efforts to make sure that supermarkets are policed in a way that allows people not to be bumping into one another and that when people come to the checkout it is carefully organised to help people's safety in the workplace as well.

"They are measures to protect people in the workplace and people as they go about their daily lives."

He said a decision on more restrictions for supermarkets will be announced this week. You can read more on this here.
