Sainsbury's submits proposals to open a new shop in south Liverpool

Sainsbury's appears to have submitted proposals for a new shop in south Liverpool.

The supermarket giant could be set to open a shop on Allerton Road after a licence application was received by Liverpool Council earlier this month.

Notices on the empty former Poundland shop at 162-164 Allerton Road suggest the chain want to operate the shop from 7am to 11pm each day.

The premises, between Specsavers and Barclays Bank, would give Sainsbury's a presence on a busy high street which has a number of popular restaurants and shops but does not have the presence of any large supermarket chain.

Poundland operated the unit for a number of years before closing its store. Prior to that it operated as a Blockbusters for many years.

The nearest chain supermarket is a large Tesco Superstore on nearby Mather Avenue, though there is a smaller Go Local shop on Allerton Road itself.

Anyone who wants to make a representation to the council about the application can do so on their website, with licensing officers then deciding either to grant the licence directly or refer the application to the council's licensing and gambling sub-committee.

Sainsbury's have been approached for comment on the application.
