Sainsbury’s shoppers furious as it cancels popular Double Up Nectar promotion

Sainsbury’s has cancelled its Nectar Double Up promotion - and some shoppers aren’t happy about it.

Double Up does exactly as the name suggests. It allows customers to exchange Nectar points for vouchers that are worth twice their face value.

The vouchers can be used to spend in Sainsbury's stores but only on certain products such as clothing, homeware and electricals.

The Double Up promotion took place in October and November in 2020, but Sainsbury's has confirmed the event has been scrapped this year.

The news hasn't gone down with all customers, with some taking to Twitter to vent their fury.

One said: "I actually can't explain how livid I am that Sainsbury's have cancelled their Nectar Double Up this year. I save my points for this!

"You've made a fortune over the pandemic, yet you cancel double up. Care to explain?"

Another said: "Nooo I've been saving my points up especially for Double Up!"

A third tweeted: "No Double Up this year :("

It comes as the supermarket announced it was launching a new My Nectar Prices scheme as part of a huge shake up, claiming shoppers could save more than £200 a year.

The idea is that Nectar knows what you buy most often, so you’ll get personalised offers based on your shops.

The supermarket says customers will be offered up to 30% off products through the new scheme.

A spokesperson for Sainsbury’s said Double Up was cancelled for this year due to fewer customers using the promotion in recent years.

They said: "We know some people will be disappointed to see it go, but we hope more customers will be able to take advantage of our new My Nectar Prices offer.

"This gives customers access to lower prices and personalised offers year-round."

Sainsbury's has over 600 supermarkets and 800 convenience stores in the UK.

What is Nectar?

Nectar is owned by Sainsbury's with around 18 million people signed up to the loyalty scheme.

But it isn't just Sainsbury's where you can earn points.

Nectar can be used in multiple stores and online retailers, such as Argos and eBay.

You get one Nectar point for every £1 spent at a qualifying store.

One Nectar point is then worth 0.5p in return, which means 100 points would convert into 50p to spend and 200 points is £1.
